As a new user it is very hard to know how to go about using a component. I would like to request a new section that explains how to find the component you want that can do what you want (each component can do many different things so the name alone is not enough to go by) and then how to create the xml code to activate it for your scene.
For instance I wanted a Von Mises stress functionality on an object and it was very difficult to find that it is available under the TetrahedronFEMForceField component but then how do I implement in xml and what do the parameters do in the GUI or what are available but not on the runSOFA GUI. And to do this using only the dOxygen doc because it is very unlikely each component is going to be detailed.
Each component needs to be detailed of course and I’m sure in time that will happen, well most likely not so how the current developers go about figuring it out is what I’m asking for. How does a developer look at the dOxygen doc and then from there create the xml and the GUI. We’re mostly programmers so looking at the code and dOxygen output we can see kind of what is going on and the perimeters required but that takes hours and I’m sure the developers are not doing that and have a speedy way of looking at certain sections and deriving the xml code quickly.14 September 2016 at 14:12 #7472HugoKeymasterHi Andrey,
This post is directly related to your Request to complete Documents>Using SOFA>Basic Components. I therefore close this one to avoid duplication.
Best wishes,
Hugo

Completing the “Components” documentation is one thing however how to proceed if this is not available is another thing entirely. Maybe read over “How does a developer look at the dOxygen doc and then from there create the xml and the GUI…”
Right now more than 150,000 users have downloaded and looked at the existing components and tried to figure them out without documentation. Most have given up. But if you could teach users how to figure any component out and write the xml, then you will have happy users. The “Programming with SOFA” section helps but more is needed thus this request. -
